Close-up Flash Photos

One of our model horse clubs has a Secret Santa swap and last year our Santa Horse gave us a fun set of hand-made ornaments.  Each one was a Stablemate-size foal in a plaster snow base with ribbons and a wreath or evergreen garland on them.  I used the new Coolpix P90 to take a few close-up photos with flash to see what worked best.

Paint Foal Ornament

First, I tried putting my finger over part of the flash.  That resulted in the ornament having a red tinge from my blood on it’s top half and the snow over-exposed.

Bay Foal OrnamentNext, I made a photo without any corrections—a sort-of control photo.  Everything is very harshly lit and the snow base is very over-exposed, with no details.

Chestnut Foal OrnamentFinally, I made one from about 3 feet away, zooming in on the ornament, with the flash in fill mode.

I still had detail in the snow base and the horse was pleasantly lit.
